Understanding Toyota Safety Sense: Advanced Safety Features Explained

Engineered to exceed the highest safety standards, Toyota vehicles provide peace of mind to drivers and passengers on every trip. Toyota goes beyond keeping you safe in the event of an accident, however. With Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) standard on most new Toyota vehicles, drivers can quickly detect nearby vehicles and respond to potential danger before it occurs. more Toyota Safety Sense Iterations and Features TSS is a package of driver assistance features, which includes technologies that can prevent a collision or assist with everyday highway driving. Current Toyota models come equipped with a variety of TSS iterations, including TSS-P, TSS 2.0, TSS 2.5 or 2.5+, and TSS 3.0. Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection Included in every TSS package from TSS-P to TSS 3.0, the Pre-Collision System detects vehicles and pedestrians in the road ahead, then issues a warning if a collision is predicted. If the driver doesn't begin braking quickly enough, this system can also engage the brakes automatically to prevent or reduce the impact of a collision. Systems included in TSS 2.0 and newer can also detect bicyclists, while TSS 3.0's system includes motorcyclist detection. Dynamic Radar Cruise Control Highway driving is made easier with TSS's Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), which can detect the vehicle ahead of yours and maintain a safe following distance. Vehicles equipped with TSS 2.0 or newer also come with Lane Tracing Assist, which can be used together with DRCC to keep your vehicle centered in its lane. Lane Departure Alert Lane Departure Alert is designed to keep you safely in your lane by warning you if an unintentional lane exit is detected. In vehicles equipped with TSS 2.0 or newer, Steering Assist can also guide you back into your lane if you don't return to your lane first. Road Sign Assist Included in TSS 2.0 and newer, Road Sign Assist uses a camera to detect road signs, including speed limit signs, stop signs, and yield signs. The system displays an icon that matches the sign in the Multi-Information Display for easy viewing. Automatic High Beams With Automatic High Beams, included in every current iteration of TSS, you can delegate the task of switching between low and high beams to your Toyota. This system detects vehicles in the road ahead of you, then switches to low beams to prevent glare. It automatically switches back to high beams when the road ahead is clear again. Proactive Driving Assist Proactive Driving Assist (PDA) is TSS's newest feature, available only on TSS 3.0. This system detects your surroundings using the vehicle's camera and radar, then uses gentle assistance to help you stay safe on the road. For example, PDA can brake gently ahead of a curve or adjust your speed to maintain a safe following distance from a vehicle or cyclist ahead.
